Agriculture in UAE
- It was a small part of the UAE Economy in the early 1990s, contributing less
than 4 percent of GDP of UAE. Since the UAE inceptions, the availability of
capital and the demand for fresh produce have encouraged agricultural
development. The main farming areas are Diqdaqah in Ras al Khaymah, Falaj al
Mualla in Umm al Qaywayn, Wadi adh Dhayd in Sharjah, Al Awir in Dubayy, and the
coastal area of Al Fujayrah. Total cultivable land is around 160,000 hectares.
For the development of agriculture in UAE The Khalifa Fund for Enterprise
Development has launched a program called "Ziraai” to support citizens working
in the agricultural sector by providing training and marketing services, and
giving interest-free loan of up to Dh1 million to each farmer. A Dubai
agriculture centre is increasing its reach in improving farming practices across
the region to reverse damage caused by climate change. The emirate expects a 51
per cent increase in local vegetable production during the upcoming farming
season compared with the last season, the Abu Dhabi Farmers' Services Centre (ADFSC).
