The “spectacular” fail of Switzerland’s gold referendum should help maintain gold’s current down trend, said one market analyst. The marketplace has been waiting since the start of November for Swiss voters to go to the polls to decide whether the population would force the Swiss National Bank to boost its gold holdings to 20% of its reserves, repatriate all of its gold and never sell any of its reserves. However the message that the people don’t care about the SNB’s gold reserves was extremely clear. By 1 p.m. in Zurich, an hour after the polls closed, Swiss broadcaster SRF called the results of the referendum with 78% of the population rejecting it; only 22% support the “Save Our Gold” initiative that was first brought forward by the People’s Swiss Party in April 2013.

Rising Gold Prices Likely to Hold Swiss Franc Strong against Surprise US Inflation Rise. Assuming that the price of gold continues to rise steadily over the week, the Swiss Franc is unlikely to decline overall. However, an astonishing uptrend for the US Dollar remains a distinct possibility. Based on yesterday’s Pound Sterling surge in response to a fractional 0.1% increase in the UK inflation rate, it is equally likely that the US Dollar will mirror this performance if unexpected growth is announced in the US CPIs today. With that in mind, the Pound flopped around 24 hours later as reality set in for speculators, and the same thing could occur for the ‘Greenback’ against the Franc tomorrow. The Swiss Balance of Trade for July is due out tomorrow and any major increases are likely to bolster the ‘Swissie’ against the competition.

Slight Rise in Gold Price Pushes ‘Swissie’ Up Against Euro. The Euro (EUR) has dipped by -0.2% against the Swiss Franc (EUR/CHF) today, although the common currency has had a relatively secure run of play elsewhere. The fall against the ‘Swissie’ (CHF) can be attributed to a minor rise in the price of gold, which is a key reserve commodity for Switzerland.

The US Dollar declined against a number of its exchange rate rivals following the publication of minutes from the last Federal Open Market Committee policy meeting. The minutes were positive in some areas but weren't seen as hawkish enough to justify a rate adjustment coming in September and the safe-haven Greenback declined accordingly. Earlier... The Swiss Franc exchange rate gained significantly against the US Dollar today as the price of gold continued to recover, printing above $1120 today. This comes after the amount per 100 ounces fell below $1090 on July 24th, which was its lowest price in five years. The Swiss Franc printed at 1.0275 today, its best result of the week so far.

Euro to Swiss Franc (EUR/CHF) Exchange Rate Trending in Narrow Range as Key Greek Bailout Vote Begins. The Euro to Swiss Franc (EUR/CHF) exchange rate has improved since yesterday, and is stable ahead of the Bundestag vote results later today. The Euro to Swiss Franc (EUR/CHF) exchange rate has fallen since yesterday, although given the currently stable performance of the Euro (EUR), the Franc’s (CHF) advantage doesn’t seem set to last.

You're in Switzerland. Are you more worried about what's happening in Europe or what's happening in the U.S.? Do you think the Greek crisis is now behind us and we've solved that problem or will that continue to haunt us the rest of the year? I would be more concerned about Europe right now because Greece is not fixed. It's an exercise to save the banks because everybody knows that if Greece defaults, it will trigger a chain of events that becomes uncontrollable.

Silver (very short-term): The silver price should consolidate with a positive bias, in New York, today. Price Drivers: Looking at today’s moves in both gold and the dollar, the Yuan devaluation did not cause these moves. The dollar Index has weakened against most currencies and the euro has jumped stronger. This is reflected in a falling euro gold price. Nevertheless, if the gold price keeps rising in the dollar expect to see a very large process of ‘short covering’ start.

Swiss gold exports to India rise to 42%; hit Rs 50k crore. As a debate continues on alleged black money stashed by Indians in Swiss banks, India now accounts for nearly 42 per cent of total gold and silver leaving Switzerland shores — largest for any single country. According to the latest official data from the Swiss government, its total export of gold, silver and coins in the month of June 2014 stood at 3.9 billion Swiss franc (over Rs 26,000 crore), out of which India alone accounted for 1.63 billion Swiss franc (about Rs 11,000 crore). Gold Suffers Longest Fall in 15 Years. Still Analysts Don't See Recovery Anytime Soon. Global gold prices ticked higher on Monday but stayed within striking distance of a 5-1/2-year low, after solid US job gains in July suggested the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates as early as next month. The metal fell for a seventh week in a row last week, its longest such retreat since 1999, having struggled to pull away from a 5-1/2-year trough of $1,077 reached during a late rout in July. Spot gold was up 0.3 per cent at $1,096.10 an ounce by 0622 GMT, recovering from an early low of $1,089.40. US gold for December delivery gained 0.2 per cent to $1,096 an ounce.

The Best Way to Buy Gold Today. At $1,084 per ounce, gold is scraping multiyear lows, down 42% in four years. And it seems the gold bears dominate the headlines – everywhere you look, each news item seems more negative than the last. There have been calls for gold to hit $800… and even lower. But all this negative buzz really belies excellent fundamentals. The truth is, we're so close to the bottom right now that we've got one of the best chances to buy gold we've seen in a decade. So here's how – and why – to do it…A recent survey by Bank of America Merrill Lynch shows a small majority of money managers consider that "gold is undervalued" around $1,155 an ounce. The survey asked 150 top fund managers worldwide with about $400 billion under management. While the bullish majority is just 1% ahead of the bears, the shift itself is nonetheless impressive. According to Merrill, the last time sentiment was bullish dates back to 2009, just before gold began an impressive two-year 90% run-up. Interestingly, this sentiment has also begun translating into action, at least for some. In Q1, Canadian mutual fund company CI Investments acquired a massive 6,117,900 shares of the SPDR Gold Trust ETF (NYSE Arca: GLD). That boosted CI's position by about $700 million to roughly $735 million in total to become CI's largest position, representing about 7.5% of CI Investments' portfolio at the end of the first quarter. Even Swiss banking giant Credit Suisse added over 4 million shares to its own position, as did Blackrock Group, Morgan Stanley, and Lazard Asset Management, all of whom are multi-asset managers rather than precious metals specialists.

Gold Market 'Quiet, Back to Slow Motion' Ahead of US Fed Decision on Rates. "Given the risk of volatility owing to the Fed statement," says Wednesday's note from Chinese-owned ICBC Standard Bank's analysts in London, "the gold market is understandably quiet." The gold market "has traded quietly in a relatively narrow range the last couple of days" agrees Swiss bank and London bullion market maker UBS, "mostly due to market participants waiting for clues from the FOMC later today. Looking however at Monday's news of a 10-month low in net gold bullion imports to China through Hong Kong, "Physical demand globally is certainly slowing," says Swiss refiner MKS's trading desk, also noting last week's news of weak exports from Switzerland – heart of the world's bar refining industry.

For centuries, in times of crisis traders preferred to invest in gold as it was always considered as a safe haven. History lovers know that gold was used as money and that the use of gold as a currency has only stopped just a few years ago. During the 20th century, gold often wasn't physically used for payment but in many countries it was customary to use the' gold standard'. The general meaning of –'a gold standard' is that you don't print money if there is no actual gold backing for it. The use of this method declined during the 20th century until it disappeared altogether in 2000 when Switzerland was the last to abandon it.
