Pakistan now got the third spot in the list of world’s largest tea importers.
Pakistan is listed as the 3rd largest tea importer in the world as it spends around Rs54 billion per year. However, the country is spending a huge amount on the commodity as it is acknowledged as one of the main hospitality drink in Pakistan.
Pakistan Bureau of Statistics or PBS data revealed that the country imports tea from around 17 countries. However, the tea import is increased by 8.63% in 2018-19’s first half.
Last year, from July to December, Pakistan imported the tea of worth more than $250 million. However, Pakistan spent around $230 million during the same time period of the last fiscal year.
According to agriculture experts, Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) and National Tea & High Value Crops Research Institute have also recommended the tea cultivation on 64,000 acres land in Swat, Mansehra, and other areas of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) to reduce the imports of tea. However, these places are much suitable for the local tea growth.
