Prize Bonds in Pakistan: Types, Draws, Tax and Claims

A prize bond is a government-issued bearer instrument that gives the holder a chance to win prize money through scheduled draws. You buy it at face value. A draw then picks winning numbers at random. Winners get cash prizes. National Prize Bonds are administered through Pakistan's National Savings system, with SBP BSC branches also handling certain prize bond services.

Types of Prize Bonds

  1. National Prize Bonds (Bearer Type)
  2. Premium Prize Bonds (Registered Type)

Prize Bond Tax in Pakistan

Prize money is not tax-free. Filers on the Active Taxpayers List pay 15 percent. Non-filers pay 30 percent. This tax is final under Section 156 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. You cannot claim it back.

Premium bond profit is also taxed, under Section 151. Premium bonds are exempt from Zakat deduction. Tax on premium prizes is cut before the money reaches your account.

Where to Buy Prize Bonds

You can buy bonds from SBP BSC offices, authorized bank branches and National Savings Centres. You can pay by cash, cheque, pay order or bank draft.

Prize bonds are open to adult Pakistani citizens and overseas Pakistanis. You need these papers:

  1. A copy of your CNIC
  2. An account maintenance certificate with your IBAN
  3. A tax certificate, if you are a filer
  4. Your nominee's CNIC details

How to Claim a Prize

  1. For a regular bond, take the original bond and your CNIC to a SBP BSC office, a designated bank or a National Savings Centre.
  2. For a premium bond, you do not need a claim form. The prize goes straight to the bank account you gave at purchase.

How often are the National Prize Bond draws held?

Draws for the common National Prize Bonds, like the Rs. 100 to Rs. 1,500 denominations are typically held quarterly, meaning every three months. The official CDNS announces the full schedule for the entire year in advance. This ensures continuous chances to win throughout the year.
