Apple has already fixed the Face ID bug on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. The company released iOS 27.0.1 this week. It stops the phone from freezing and restarting when Face ID fails.
Some iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max users reported their phone freezing after a failed Face ID scan. The screen stopped responding for a few seconds. The phone then restarted on its own.
The problem showed up most when Face ID failed inside apps like Wallet or Passwords, or during an App Store purchase. Not every unit had the bug. Users could sometimes trigger it by covering their face and tapping “Try Face ID Again.”
This is the first iPhone where Apple placed the Face ID sensor under the display. There is no notch or Dynamic Island cutout. The new design likely caused the software fault. Apple has not shared the exact technical reason.
Apple released iOS 27.0.1 about two weeks after iOS 27 launched. The update’s release notes name the bug directly: “iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may unexpectedly restart when Face ID fails to authenticate.”
