Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated 33 mobile police stations on Wednesday, offering 14 services including FIR registration across Punjab. The vans come equipped with modern facilities and technology to provide policing services at citizens’ doorsteps.
Six of these units are set aside for issues faced by women, Punjab Home Secretary Ahmad Javed Qazi said in a briefing on the launch.
What Are Mobile Police Stations?
Think of them as a police station on wheels. Each van carries staff and equipment to handle common police work on the spot, so people in far areas don’t need to travel to a regular station.
Services Offered
The mobile units deliver 14 police services, ranging from FIR registration and online e-tagging to tenant registration, employee verification and criminal record checks. Citizens can also:
- Report lost documents, such as national ID cards and chequebooks directly through these units
- Get character certificates
- Apply for driving licence services, including learner permits, renewals, duplicate licences and international driving permits
Anyone lodging an FIR will get an immediate online e-tag to track their case.
Staff and How the Vans Will Run
Each mobile police station will be headed by a sub-inspector, supported by a field supervisor, a senior station assistant, and male and female constables. The local station house officer and beat officer will stay present in the field to oversee the work under standard rules.
The senior station assistant will manage IT work, digital database entries and online tracking, while constables will guide visitors.
Pink Mobile Police Stations for Women
Pink mobile police stations, staffed by women, will deal with sensitive matters involving harassment, violence and abuse against women and children. CM Maryam said specialised staff had been assigned to these units to handle such cases with empathy and privacy.
Where and When the Vans Will Operate
The vans will visit universities and women’s colleges on a fixed schedule. Other deployment will be based on real-time crime data and calls to the police emergency helpline 15.
Van schedules will be shared on social media, and local mosques will announce a unit’s arrival in an area beforehand.
What CM Maryam Said
CM Maryam inspected one of the new units, reviewed how it works and spoke with the on-duty staff. She asked a senior station assistant and a female public guide about the process for helping citizens.
She said the initiative would help close the gap between the public and police, while saving citizens time and travel costs, especially those living in far-flung and underserved areas.
