The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has moved the income tax return deadline for tax year 2026. The old date was September 30. The new date is October 15, 2026.
The extension is for people who had to file by September 30. FBR issued it under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.
What FBR Announced
FBR announced the extension on Wednesday, September 30. That was just hours before the old deadline ended. It said trade bodies and tax bar associations had asked for more time.
Dawn reported that these groups pointed to late return forms and heavy online traffic. The Karachi Tax Bar Association also wrote to FBR about IRIS portal problems. It said the final return form was notified only on September 2.
How Many Returns Have Been Filed?
FBR received 5.767 million returns by midnight on September 30. Last year, the same period saw 3.980 million. That is a 45 percent rise.
Tax paid with returns was Rs77.3 billion. Last year it was Rs83.3 billion. That is about 7 percent lower. Corporate returns paid less, falling from Rs49 billion to Rs39.1 billion.
