The government is not buying aircraft for privatised Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad said this on Sunday. He added that no sovereign guarantee or taxpayer-funded loan has been announced for the jets.

Social media users claimed a minister was arranging government-linked financing for PIA’s jets. Schehzad’s post was a reply to those claims.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb met US Exim Bank Chair John Jovanovich in New York on September 24. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The finance ministry said Aurangzeb shared PIA’s interest in Boeing 787 Dreamliners. He asked for a financing package that covers aircraft and engines. Arab News reported that the talks also touched on pre-delivery payments for the aircraft.
The two sides also spoke about refinery upgrades and the Reko Diq mining project.
