Pakistan is exploring the tokenisation of its existing Eurobond debt, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said on Monday.

The government is discussing the plan and seeking Cabinet approval before moving ahead. The next step would be issuing a request for proposals (RFP).

Aurangzeb shared the update while speaking at the “Dialogue on Digital Assets and the Future of Banking” in Pakistan. The Pakistan Banks’ Association (PBA) organised the event with LUMS.

The government wants to explore whether existing Eurobond debt can be managed through digital technology. Tokenisation means creating digital versions of financial assets on a blockchain. This technology can allow financial instruments to be recorded and handled digitally.

However, Pakistan has not announced which Eurobonds would be included in the plan. The government also has not shared a timeline for the project.

Aurangzeb said the Finance Ministry is still reviewing the proposal. He confirmed that the government is holding discussions and waiting for Cabinet approval. The ministry plans to issue an RFP after receiving the required approval.
