WhatsApp announced a feature that lets people use a WhatsApp username instead of number to chat with contacts. According to Meta, the platform opened registration so users can reserve names before the rollout later this year.
Meta launched an update that changes how people connect on the platform. According to the company, users can now select a WhatsApp username instead of number to start chats without revealing contact details. This option aims to stop phone numbers from appearing in groups or to strangers.
Meta opened username reservations for well over three billion users globally to claim their unique handles before a full rollout.
Naming Rules and Syncing
WhatsApp stated that the system requires a phone number to set up accounts, but users do not have to share it.
According to company instructions, WhatsApp usernames must be unique, ranging between 3 and 35 characters. They must begin with a letter and cannot end with domains like dot com. Meta added that a built-in username generator will automatically suggest available options if a desired name is already taken.
To prevent identity theft, the platform blocked people from claiming celebrity names. However, businesses and creators can link their accounts to the Meta Accounts Center. This connection lets them sync and claim their existing Facebook or Instagram handles.
No Public Directory and Security Code for Safety
WhatsApp stated that the platform will not maintain a public directory for users to browse. Unlike Instagram, strangers cannot search random names. They must know the exact handle to find someone.
To prevent spam, the company introduced a tool called a username key. This tool acts as a security code of four digits. WhatsApp explained that if a user activates this key, a stranger must enter the code to start a conversation for the first time.
Without the key, the message moves silently into a message requests folder without ringing the main inbox. Chats with people who already have the phone number will not change.
