Jamaat-e-Islami holds nationwide road blockades today, August 7, 2026, at 4:00 PM to protest rising fuel prices and the petroleum levy.
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) supporters take to the streets across Pakistan today. The party demands an immediate end to the petroleum levy and high inflation. Party workers will block main roads linking districts nationwide starting at 4:00 PM.
Objections to Fuel Taxes and Pricing
JI Chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman announced the protests at a press conference in Mansoorah. He criticized the petroleum levy and called it a ‘bhatta tax’ on poor citizens. He stated that petrol would retail for under Rs 200 per liter without extra government taxes. Rehman also opposed daily price updates by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).
Core Demands from the Government
The party demands the cancellation of costly deals with independent power producers. It also calls on provincial governments to lower food prices to pre-conflict levels. Furthermore, the party wants an immediate end to frequent power outages.
Second Phase of the Protest Campaign
Today’s blockades mark the second phase of JI’s anti-inflation campaign. The party organized 20,000 local meetings across the country to mobilize supporters. Rehman urged young citizens to join the protests on motorcycles to strengthen the road closures. Ambulances will still be allowed through the blockades.
Legal Actions and Party Support
JI previously filed a petition in the Federal Constitutional Court against the petroleum levy. The party argued that executive notifications passed taxes without parliamentary approval.
Rehman said the protest would continue until the party’s demands were met.
