SECP Rolls Out New Rules to Speed Up Stock Market Account Opening

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has introduced new digital rules for opening stock market accounts. Brokers must now open an account within one day and give a final decision within two days. The system runs all day and night, gives investors a tracking ID for their application, forces brokers to explain any rejection in writing, and skips repeat verification for investors who are already verified. SECP Chairman Dr Kabir Ahmed Sidhu said the changes are part of a push to grow Pakistan’s investor base to 2.5 million people, with young investors as the main target.

What Changes for Investors

New Rule What It Means
One-day account opening Brokers must open the account within one day of application
Two-day decision SECP requires a final decision within two days
24/7 processing The system works around the clock, not just office hours
Application tracking Investors get a unique ID to track their application
Broker accountability Brokers must give a written reason for any rejection
No repeat verification Already-verified investors don’t go through the process again

Why It Matters

Dr Sidhu said the new system uses technology to make stock market investing simpler and safer, and easier to reach for every Pakistani. He pointed to youth participation as the SECP’s main focus going forward, tying the changes to the regulator’s goal of reaching 2.5 million investors.
