Banks and cybersecurity specialists have warned about a rise in ATM cash trapping incidents across Pakistan. In cash trapping scams, criminals use devices to obstruct any cash dispensing slot in an ATM, and then steal the lost funds after the user leaves the ATM services.
How ATM Cash Trapping Works?

Scammers will either use a device inserted into, or placed in front of, the cash dispenser in an ATM. Once a customer requests an ATM transaction, the cash is stuck and not released into the customer’s hand. The criminals then pick up the cash once the user leaves the ATM services.
Experts have advised their clients of two types of traps, which are visible, but have the appearance of a cash dispenser, and hidden that have been placed inside the machine. Some criminal groups also install fake shutters to duplicate the cash dispensing process, blocking any potential cash flow.
Banks Urge Citizens to Stay Alert Against ATM Frauds
Authorities recommend that ATM users always check the card slot and cash dispenser before using the machine. If you see panels that are loose or a false covering, or visible wires, do not use that machine. Always cover the keypad as you enter your PIN number, and never share your PIN number with anyone. If money does not come out, remain at the ATM and call your bank immediately.
The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency stated that banks should install anti-cash-trapping devices and update ATMs. Officials stated that criminals were using new technology that made scams much more advanced.
Banks have also been asked to improve security policies for ATMs and run awareness campaigns to ensure users are protected against ATM cash trapping fraud in Pakistan.
