The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a warning about scams targeting biometric data through fake SIM card offers and financial aid programs.
Potential Dangers of Fingerprint Scams via Free SIM Card
In Pakistan, fraudsters present themselves as telecom or welfare officials and provide free SIM cards and cash aid to obtain biometric information. Other scammers offer free SIM cards or sell free SIM cards with 5 credit online to lure victims.
These SIMs are subsequently utilized in identity theft, online fraud, and financial crimes. Legally, the registered owner is still in charge of any criminal activity that occurred using their SIM card.

Role of Meta and PTA in Raising Awareness
Meta has partnered with PTA and EYEYAH! to introduce the “Is This Legit?” digital literacy campaign. The campaign will educate citizens about how to detect fraudulent internet transactions regarding free sim cards online, phishing attacks, and how to defend their digital identity on mobile networks.
PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman called the collaboration a step toward building a safer online ecosystem in Pakistan.
Steps to Prevent Fingerprint Scams in Pakistan
Fingerprints or personal information should not be given by the citizens before they have confirmed any request biometric verification. PTA warns that handing over a SIM registered in your name to another person is a punishable offense under telecom regulations. Report suspicious activities to PTA immediately.
