$636 Billion Gold Discovery in Tarbela
A claim about gold reserves worth $636 billion in Tarbela Dam has drawn national attention. Hanif Gohar, Chairman of Air Karachi and former FPCCI vice president, said divers collected soil samples from the dam and lab tests showed traces of gold. Based on those results, he estimated the reserves’ total value at around $636 billion.
Government Verification Pending
No official confirmation or geological survey report has validated this figure. Experts note that the data comes from preliminary sampling, not from a verified mineral assessment. The gold reserves in Pakistan mentioned here remain under review, and the government has yet to issue an official response.
Gohar said his firm is willing to mine the Tarbela gold resources with foreign investors (Holland and Canada) subject to government authorization. According to him, the project would assist in the reduction of the external debt of Pakistan. Nevertheless, mining analysts caution that prior to the actual mining, the process has to undergo a massive feasibility study and governmental clearance.
In case these reserves are validated, there would be huge investment opportunities and improvement of the foreign reserves in Pakistan. At this point, the discovery is an opportunity to be considered officially. The government will be supposed to shed more light on what happened to the Tarbela gold discovery in the next several weeks.
