Google has officially launched the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, the company’s latest foldable smartphone on October 09,2025, following its earlier reveal in August alongside the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL.
A New Kind of Foldable Design
To mark the release, Google explained its decision to build a gearless hinge for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold — a move aimed at improving durability and creating a smoother folding experience.
“We wanted to offer more without losing the benefits of a pro-level phone,” said Claude Zellweger, head of Pixel’s industrial design team.
Why a Gearless Hinge?
Traditional foldable phones use gears that can trap dust and wear out over time.
Google removed them completely.
- The gearless hinge avoids these issues, keeping the fold smooth and reliable.
- It does not utilize gears, but CAMs, small components that transform circular motion into straight movement.
- These spring-loaded CAMs maintain equal opening and closing of both halves of the device.
Benefits of the New Design
The new hinge is not only about the durability but also enhances the design as a whole:
- Bigger screens and thinner frames.
- Bigger battery capacity.
- Greater in-hand comfort as a result of a thinner hinge.
- Greater IP68 dust and water protection, due to the reduced number of gaps in the mechanism.
