A major LNG shipment from Qatar is scheduled to dock at Port Qasim tonight. It is a critical step in restoring the energy supply of Pakistan. The arrival of the vessel Al Khayreetit with 65,000 metric tons of gas is expected to provide much-needed relief to the power sector and help reduce the ongoing electricity load-shedding across the country.

The LNG carrier Al Khayreetit is currently heading toward Karachi after passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping tracking data confirms that the vessel departed from Qatar’s Ras Laffan Port on May 5, carrying approximately 65,000 metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

According to port officials and shipping sources, the vessel is expected to reach Port Qasim on Monday night. This shipment is part of the long-term supply agreement between Pakistan and Qatar, which remains a foundation of the country’s fuel security strategy.

Strategic Shift Away from Spot Purchases

The arrival of this cargo explains the government’s recent decision to skip buying expensive gas from the global “spot” market. Just a few days ago, Pakistan opted not to purchase two optional LNG cargoes that were available at current market rates.

Energy experts point out that the restoration of steady supplies from Qatar allowed the government to save foreign exchange. Pakistan is relying on fixed price long-term contracts rather than fluctuating international market prices. The country is attempting to stabilize its energy costs and ensure a consistent supply for power plants.

Impact on Load-Shedding and Industry

The power sector is the primary beneficiary of this delivery. The electricity demand has surged as summer temperatures rise. It has led to increased load-shedding in both urban and rural areas. This fresh supply of LNG will allow gas fired power plants to increase their output immediately.

The industrial sector of the country, particularly in Karachi, is also expected to see a more stable supply of gas. Authorities are hopeful that the regular arrival of these scheduled Qatari shipments will prevent the need for drastic power cuts during the peak summer months ahead.
