The federal government has decided to allocate dedicated development funds for Karachi. Under the new national budget, this fund will go toward many ongoing and new infrastructure projects.
According to official budget documents, the federal government has proposed a main grant of Rs1.198 billion. This amount will support the Karachi Green Line Bus (BRT) project. It aims to finish terminal construction and extend the bus routes.
The budget also includes many specific financial plans for the city. This fund will help fix broken local roads and street networks. It will also help clean up neighborhood drains and improve water supply systems across different areas.
Local Infrastructure and District Development Grants
The budget documents outline specific financial resources to resolve municipal issues across several neighborhoods.
- A sum of Rs370 million is designated to repair roads and public spaces in the Nazimabad and Liaquatabad areas.
- The government has proposed Rs350 million for Landhi, Zaman, and Korangi Towns. This money will repair local streets and water supply pipelines. It will also fix sewer drainage systems and public playgrounds.
- The planning division has proposed Rs260 million for District West to restore public facilities and roads
- Rs50 million is proposed for roads and drainage networks across Korangi and Malir districts.
- The budget sets aside Rs45 million for street and drainage improvements in District Central.
New Healthcare and Higher Education Projects
Apart from executing road and transit upgrades, the federal budget introduces financial seed allocations to build new medical institutions and academic centers in the city. The planning document states that a budget of Rs400 million has been proposed to start construction on the Jinnah Medical Complex and Research Center Karachi.
Furthermore, the government has set aside Rs390 million for an upgradation project at the National Research and Fertility Care Center.
To expand professional medical training within the province, the federal administration has also proposed Rs50 million to establish the National University of Nursing in Karachi.
