Proposed Electricity Tariff Hike to Impose Rs 41 Billion Additional Burden on Consumers

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has formally petitioned the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for a Rs 2.52 per unit increase in electricity tariffs for July under the monthly Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA).

If approved the proposed price hike will place an estimated financial burden of Rs 41 billion (inclusive of GST) on power consumers across Pakistan.

What Happens Next?

NEPRA will analyze the generation cost data submitted by CPPA during its public hearing on August 27 before making a final determination on the exact FCA per unit to be passed on in upcoming electricity bills.

Breakdown of Power Generation Mix

The request submitted by the CPPA includes a detailed breakdown of the various costs incurred in electricity generation during July.

  • Hydropower: 39.81% (Largest share)
  • Imported Coal: 14.38%
  • Local Coal: 10.91%
  • Imported LNG: 10.78% at Rs 47.37 per unit (Total cost: Rs 77.19 billion)
  • Nuclear Power: 10.10% at Rs 3.02 per unit
  • Furnace Oil: 1.42% at Rs 50.07 per unit (Total cost: Rs 10.77 billion)
  • High-Speed Diesel: 31 million units generated at Rs 54.47 per unit
