Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif handed over 50 electric cars to Islamabad Police on September 8, 2026. The cars will run under a new unit called the Capital Patrol force.
Sharif gave the keys to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Islamabad IGP Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi at a ceremony in the capital.
A New 200-Officer Patrol Unit
The Capital Patrol force will have 200 police officers. Each patrol team will pair one male and one female officer. Motorcycle riders will also join the unit for faster response times.
Every officer in the unit will wear a body camera. Officials say this will help keep patrols transparent and accountable.
The Cars: BYD Atto 2
All 50 vehicles are BYD Atto 2 electric SUVs. In Pakistan, this model comes in one version, priced at Rs 7.29 million.
Each car has a front-mounted motor that makes 130 kW of power and 290 Nm of torque. It runs on a 45.12 kWh battery. The battery can charge from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes.
Expected to Save Rs 34 Million a Month
Officials told the prime minister the fleet could save close to Rs 34 million a month in fuel costs. At that rate, each car could pay for itself in about 10.5 months.
The next day, on September 9, Islamabad police held a flag march from D-Chowk to show off the new fleet on the capital’s main roads.
