On August 24, 2025, several media outlets reported that Pakistan Railways had finalized a plan for the Karachi to Lahore bullet train. According to those reports, the high-speed rail project would connect Karachi, Hyderabad, Multan, Sahiwal, and Lahore over a distance of nearly 1,215 kilometers. The train was said to operate at speeds of up to 250 km/h, reducing travel time between Karachi and Lahore from almost 20 hours to just 5 hours.
According to the same reports, feasibility study on Karachi to Lahore bullet train was reported finished in June 2025, to be followed by construction in 2026, testing in 2029 and full operation in 2030 with 10-15 trip per day.
By August 26–27, 2025, the Ministry of Railways issued an official statement denying these claims. The ministry confirmed that there is no approved Karachi to Lahore bullet train project at this time. It stated that the reports circulating in the media were “baseless” and that Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi made no such announcement.
Officials further clarified that the government’s current focus is on upgrading existing railway infrastructure under ongoing projects such as ML-1, instead of introducing new high-speed bullet trains.
Karachi to Lahore bullet train remains unapproved and not included in official plans. The ministry has urged the public to rely only on official announcements for updates regarding railway projects.
