Pakistan Petroleum Limited has officially started oil and gas production from a well in Sindh. The Faiz X-1 Deep well remained inoperative for over a decade. It was connected to the national grid via a new 4.5 kilometer pipeline. The well is now producing 3.6 million cubic feet of gas and 750 barrels of oil daily.
Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has successfully started commercial production from the Faiz X-1 Deep well. It is located in the Gambat South Block in the Sanghar district in Sindh. In a formal filing to the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Friday, the company confirmed that the well is now fully integrated into the national energy supply.
The facility is currently contributing 3.6 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMscfd) to the national supply. In addition to the gas, the well is producing 750 barrels of oil (condensate) daily, which is a high-quality light oil used by refineries.
Solving a 12-Year Infrastructure Problem
The well was originally drilled and discovered in 2014. However, despite the successful discovery of hydrocarbons at the time, the well could not be used. The primary obstacle was the complete lack of oil and gas transmission pipelines in that area.
To resolve this long standing issue, PPL recently completed a 4.5-kilometer pipeline to connect the well to the existing gathering network. This project has finally allowed the company to monetize a “stuck” asset that had been idle for over a decade.
Technical Revival and Economic Impact
The revival process involved more than just laying pipes. PPL engineers first carried out specialized well intervention tasks in late February. They then installed modern surface facilities to ensure the well could handle long term commercial flow. These technical upgrades were needed to bring the 2014 discovery up to the 2026 safety and production standards.
By reviving this old discovery, PPL is following a cost effective strategy of using existing wells to boost domestic production and reduce the need for expensive fuel imports.
Future Outlook for Gambat South
The Gambat South Block is one of PPL’s most productive areas, with over a dozen discoveries made in the region so far. The company is currently working on expanding its processing plants to handle even more volume from nearby sites.
PPL plans to continue identifying idle discoveries across its portfolio that can be brought online through similar infrastructure investments.
