Electricity Prices Might Go Up Again — NEPRA’s New Decision in the Making

NEPRA has completed a hearing on power companies’ request to raise electricity prices. If approved, electricity could become more expensive by 45 paisa per unit for three months.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has completed its hearing on the first quarterly adjustment for DISCOs and K-Electric. The federal government has asked an increase of 45 paisa per unit in power rates for the next three months.

The hearing was led by NEPRA Chairman Waseem Mukhtar. Power companies (DISCOs) demanded a Rs 8.41 billion increase under the first-quarter adjustment. If NEPRA approves, it will place a total burden of around Rs 8.5 billion on consumers.

Public Concerns Over Price Hike

During the hearing, consumer representatives opposed the proposal. They said that the Prime Minister had earlier promised to cut electricity by Rs 7.41 per unit for three months, but now there is a move to raise prices again.

They added that circular debt is still increasing. The government has already announced relief packages for agricultural and industrial users, they added.

Why the Hike Was Proposed

NEPRA member Rafiq Sheikh said that electricity losses, power theft, and unpaid bills are the main reasons behind this issue. Officials from the Power Division said the government is facing a big financial gap because people are not paying bills on time.

NEPRA will give its final decision on the 45 paisa increase after completing its review.
