Petrol and diesel have gone up again in Pakistan. The government announced the new rates on Wednesday. They take effect today, September 17.
Petrol now costs Rs 391.22 per litre, up by Rs 6.88. Diesel (HSD) is up by Rs 5.62, now priced at Rs 421.45 per litre.
Yesterday, petrol sold at Rs384.34 and diesel at Rs415.83 per litre.
Pakistan’s New Daily Pricing System
Since July 17, Pakistan reviews fuel prices daily instead of weekly. Rates are based on the average international price over the past seven days.
This daily system replaced the weekly one, which itself had replaced an older two-week cycle. The change came after fresh fighting between Iran and the US disrupted oil supplies from the Middle East.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik says the new method matches how other countries price fuel. OGRA now posts rates on its website daily, without needing the prime minister’s approval each time. Prices set on Fridays stay the same over the weekend.
The government still charges Rs114 per litre in tax and duty on petrol. Diesel carries Rs100 per litre in tax.
Even after today’s rise, fuel remains cheaper than its highest point this year. Diesel had hit Rs520.35 per litre on April 3. Petrol had touched Rs458.41 per litre the same day. Both had climbed fast after the US-Iran war broke out in late February.
Relief for Small Vehicles
On September 13, PM Shehbaz Sharif announced relief for motorcycles, rickshaws, and cars up to 800cc. Two- and three-wheeler owners get Rs100 per litre off on 20 litres a month. Owners of small cars get the same discount on 30 litres a month.
