- A mandatory QR code registration has been launched for all electricity consumers receiving government subsidies
- All Distribution Companies (DISCOs) must now clearly show the exact subsidy amount on every bill for better transparency.
- The Power Division has confirmed that this digital verification is required to prevent the misuse of public funds by undeserving households.
On Thursday, the Power Division announced a new digital verification system for the national power grid. All protected consumers, those receiving government relief, will now find a QR code on their monthly electricity bills starting with the May 2026 billing cycle.
To continue receiving reduced rates, consumers are required to
- Scan the QR code using your smartphone.
- Follow the online link that appears.
- Complete the registration form to verify your status.
This registration allows the government to verify that the person living in the house is the actual resident of the property, effectively removing ghost beneficiaries and commercial properties that have been incorrectly categorized.
Total Transparency in Billing
The Ministry of Energy has ordered all DISCOs (like K-Electric, LESCO, and IESCO) to display a transparent breakdown of the consumers’ subsidy. Every bill will now have a dedicated section that says “Government Subsidy” followed by the specific amount in PKR.
Previously, the relief was often hidden in the net unit price. This change was made so that consumers can see exactly how much relief they are getting every month.
Why Is the Government Doing This?
The government currently spends hundreds of billions of rupees annually on power subsidies. In the past many large houses or commercial properties were incorrectly listed as protected.
Authorities believe this digital registration will ensure that taxpayers’ money is utilized fairly. It must reach only poor and middle-class households that genuinely qualify for support.
Important: This is NOT a Subsidy Cut
The Power Division spokesperson emphasized that this registration does not mean the subsidy is being abolished. It is strictly for verification. However, the government has urged consumers to complete the process as soon as possible.
However, failure to complete the QR code registration could lead to technical complications or a temporary suspension of the subsidy benefits in future billing cycles.
Note: If the code doesn’t work or you think your subsidy amount is wrong, call your local power company’s helpline immediately.
