Commuters in Pakistan pay much less for public transport compared to most countries.
A 2025 Australian research body studied transport fares in 123 countries and 319 cities. The report ranked Pakistan the fifth most affordable country for public transport in the world. It showed that the average fare for a one-way ticket in Pakistan is Rs 46, and a monthly pass costs around Rs 1,800.
At the top of the list, Iceland is the most expensive, with a one-way ticket costing about Rs 1,365 and a monthly pass around Rs 22,660. Other costly countries include Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Finland.
The report also showed that the cheapest country for public transport is Luxembourg, which offers free travel. It is followed by Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Syria, and then Pakistan.
According to analysts, Pakistan’s public transport is still very affordable for ordinary commuters. In contrast, in Europe, high fares put heavy pressure on household budgets.
