FBR Tax Filing Deadline Not Extended: Last Day to File is 30 September 2025

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has officially assured that the FBR tax returns filing deadline 2025 is still 30 September 2025, and there is no blanket extension. Although many trade bodies and taxpayers have been urging the FBR to extend the deadline to all filers, the authority said that the deadline will not be further extended to all of them.

While there is no general relaxation, the FBR extends the tax returns filing deadline by up to 15 days only in cases of extreme hardship. Taxpayers seeking this relief must first pay all due taxes by 30 September and then apply for an individual extension through the relevant FBR committee for approval. This conditional relief does not apply to all filers and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

FBR reported around 3.2 million returns filed, less than half of last year’s 7.7 million. Tax experts and business groups requested an extension citing IRIS portal glitches and technical issues, but the FBR maintained that the tax returns filing deadline remains unchanged for the majority of taxpayers.

Penalties for Missing the FBR Tax Returns Filing Deadline

The FBR alerted that non-compliance with FBR prolongs tax returns filing deadline and requirement can result in:

  • Late filer status with penalties under the Income Tax Ordinance.

  • Bank accounts freeze or the limitation of financial operations.

  • Loss of “active filer” status, resulting in higher withholding taxes.

The FBR clarified that the requirement to declare the market value of assets in the 2025 return form is not a new tax or additional liability. The data is for record-keeping and monitoring. Taxpayers already filed returns are not required to refile. No formal valuation document is required for ordinary taxpayers.

Individuals and businesses must submit their income tax returns by 30 September 2025 to avoid penalties. Those unable to file on time can request the limited 15-day extension, but taxes must be paid first. Taxpayers are advised to avoid last-minute filings due to possible system issues.
