Multiple areas of Karachi have been experiencing power supply suspension since more than 36 hours following heavy rain in Karachi in 2025, which has paralyzed businesses and industries, the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has claimed.
Chairman of the Businessmen Group (BMG), Zubair Motiwala, and KCCI President, Muhammad Javed Bilwani, said torrential rain in Karachi has crippled the city, disrupted business operations, and caused major financial losses. They noted that despite Karachi being the economic hub of Pakistan, contributing the largest share to the national exchequer, the city continues to face neglect in infrastructure development.
Karachi Chamber of Commerce Statement on Karachi Rain 2025
In a joint statement, KCCI leaders reminded that on April 21, they had warned Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi about possible devastation. They demanded Sindh government immediately declare a state of emergency in Karachi, as more heavy rain in Karachi has been forecast in the coming week.
Zubair Motiwala said 17 lives have been lost, roads have turned into rivers, houses have been submerged, and businesses are facing severe losses. He urged immediate compensation for small shopkeepers whose shops and goods were damaged due to urban flooding in Karachi. He also recommended freezing provincial taxes temporarily to provide relief.
Karachi Electricity Crisis After Heavy Rain
Industrial zones in Karachi have also been hit, with production completely halted due to power outages.K-Electric has not completely restored electricity in Karachi after 36 hours and the industries and residential areas are left without any supply of electricity. Business leaders demanded that electricity and gas bill payments be deferred until business activity resumes.
Record Rainfall in Karachi 2025
According to KCCI President Javed Bilwani, nearly 250 millimeters of rain in Karachi this week has exceeded the city’s drainage capacity. He said schools, colleges, universities, industries, and businesses have been closed, causing billions of rupees in economic losses at both national and provincial levels.
He stressed that Karachi needs a long-term drainage and sewerage master plan to prevent urban flooding and loss of life in future. KCCI warned that without decisive action, every passing hour will deepen Karachi’s crisis.
Call for Karachi Emergency Measures
KCCI urged the Sindh government, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, NDMA, district administration, K-Electric, and Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation to work under unified command and immediately launch 24/7 operations for drain cleaning and floodwater removal.
They also requested deployment of rescue teams, supply of dewatering equipment, setting up emergency shelters and awareness campaign so that the affected communities are helped.
KCCI warned that the survival of Karachi’s population of 25 million and Pakistan’s economic backbone depends on urgent measures. “If Karachi sinks, the entire economy sinks,” they stated.
